How to support the transformation and boost the performance of the fast-evolving Truck Transportation sector?

Julien Bourdonnec, Head of AXA Partners’ Truck and Trailer division, shares his expert insights on the market dynamics and the ambition to go beyond traditional assistance to become a strategic partner for industry players (manufacturers, distributors) and transport companies.

A core business driven by profitability

With more than 90% of goods transported by road in Europe, road freight transport is the backbone of European logistics. For transport companies, vehicles are profit centers. " A delay can result in financial penalties and lost revenue, and ultimately customer unsatisfaction" explains Julien Bourdonnec. Minimizing these interruptions and getting vehicles back on the road as quickly as possible is absolutely critical but won’t be enough to make the difference.

A market under pressure: cost, digitalization and sustainability

Over the past years, the transport companies, and ultimately the heavy vehicle assistance market, are operating in a complex environment shaped by:

  • Rising operational costs: fuel, vehicles, wages, spare parts, and insurance premiums while still expected to deliver high-quality service and limited ability to pass on increases to customers.
  • Growing digital expectations: customers expect real-time information, seamless assistance.
  • A shift toward predictive maintenance, a real game-changer:  "By reducing the need for towing, we are cutting time, fuel consumption and emissions, a win for both customer satisfaction, sustainability and operational efficiency."

Beyond traditional assistance, proposing services including maintenance and preventive assistance (detecting breakdowns before they happen) is what will make us an uptime partner. Being able to support clients throughout the entire vehicle cycle creates more value.

Delivering performance-driven solutions

To meet these challenges, AXA Partners provides:

  • A multilingual, centralized assistance platform: To accompany both domestic and global actors, another true difference is the capacity to operate with a seamless structure that enables fast and efficient services. "Our hubs are centrally managed by a hypervision team, covering 27 European languages. Each customer service officer speaks at least three languages, and calls can be handled in any of our locations as long as the required language skill is available. It’s as if all our agents were working in a single virtual building!"
  • Bumper-to-bumper assistance and driver support: companies need end-to-end assistance solutions for trucks, trailers, and for their equipment. "From on-the-spot repairs to heavy-duty recovery, we provide tailored solutions to keep vehicles moving," says Julien Bourdonnec.
  • Pay-per-use or insurance-backed services, tailored to the operational needs of transporters. Beyond vehicle support, the division also assists drivers with logistics services, including accommodation and medical assistance when needed.
"Bumper to Bumper" coverage with EBTS

AXA Partners has announced in March 2025 the acquisition by AXA Partners of EBTS, a group of service companies specialized in Truck, Trailer and Tyre assistance, including refrigeration units, and all associated components. This strategic move reinforces our ability to assist customers everywhere in Europe in their native language.

The integration with EBTS in 2025 acts as a catalyst for market growth, scaling operations from €90 million with a targeted year-end goal of €160 million, and an objective to reach €200 million within three years.

By combining our insurance-backed services with EBTS’s specialized network, the expanded division strengthens its leadership across all truck assistance segments—including tractor units, trailers, tires, and trailer components.

Together, we form a powerful ecosystem, delivering seamless assistance through a combination of insurance expertise, service excellence and innovative digital solutions.

This strategic move accelerates our Truck assistance division growth and cements its position as a key player in the European truck and trailer assistance market.
