Travel Trends 2026:
Why smarter protection is becoming essential

According to IATA, 2024 marked a record year for global passenger demand. Passenger volumes remain strong, but predictability has declined…a trend confirmed in 2025.

Travel flows are shifting toward new destinations, digital platforms shape most booking decisions and traveler motivations are more diverse than ever. Climate volatility, geopolitical uncertainty and regulatory changes are adding further complexity to an already dynamic and connected ecosystem.

A more diversified travel landscape means more disruption points, more touchpoints and higher expectations for reassurance. In this environment, protection is about enabling confidence throughout the entire journey.

Shifting travel flows are redefining risk

Climate change is influencing destination choices. Heatwaves in Southern Europe are driving demand for “coolcations,” with nearly one in three European travelers now actively seeking cooler destinations. Sustainability expectations are also rising, with travelers increasingly prioritizing responsible travel choices.

Geopolitical instability redirects tourism flows. Some traditionally strong markets have seen visitor declines, while alternative destinations are gaining momentum. At the same time, overtourism is prompting regulatory responses, from tourist taxes to capacity controls.

Medical tourism is expanding. Patients travel internationally for cost savings, faster access to care, and specialized procedures. Cross-border healthcare is becoming a structural component of the travel landscape.

These developments introduce new risk patterns like climate disruption, sudden itinerary changes, regulatory constraints, and complex medical coordination.

At the same time, micro-trends are reshaping traveler demand. Travel is becoming more personal, passion-led and experience-driven. Pets are increasingly considered full travel companions, fandom is influencing destination choices, hotels are embracing hyper-personalization, and some travelers are selecting destinations specifically to experience cutting-edge technology. Travel decisions are driven by identity, lifestyle and interests.

From booking to boarding: the rise of tech-driven travel

According to IATA’s 2025 Global Passenger Survey, 78% of travelers want a smartphone solution that integrates digital wallet, digital passport and loyalty cards, while 54% use mobile apps to book their travel. Frictionless travel is an expectation.

Around 50% of travelers have already used biometric identification during their journey, with 85% reporting high levels of satisfaction. Moreover, nearly three-quarters say they are willing to share biometric data if it helps streamline airport processes.

AI is also reshaping trip planning. Although only 46% of travelers say they fully trust AI systems, around 18% of them already use generative AI tools for inspiration. Travelers are practicing what we might call “Travel Mixology”: using large language models like Chat GPT for ideas, then validating choices through platforms such as Reddit, YouTube or social communities before booking.

For travel brands, this results in more fragmented motivations, more destinations and more complex risk exposure. Protection solutions must evolve accordingly. As highlighted in our recent eSIM initiative, connectivity itself has become a foundational layer of reassurance. Supporting travelers today means combining protection, digital tools, real-time information and seamless access to assistance

Rising expectations are transforming travel protection

Research shows that nearly 7 in 10 US travelers would consider purchasing travel insurance for future leisure trips, with disruption and medical emergencies remaining the primary concerns.

For airlines, OTAs, fintech and telco partners, embedded insurance is therefore no longer a secondary add-on. It is a strategic lever to enhance trust, differentiate the customer experience and unlock additional revenue stream in a competitive market.

Parametric solutions illustrate this shift. Automated flight delay coverage can trigger benefits such as lounge access, rebooking support or instant compensation without requiring customers to submit a claim. Weather-triggered solutions follow the same logic, reducing friction while increasing perceived value.

Beyond insurance: delivering protection across the journey

At AXA Partners, our model combines global assistance expertise, in-house medical capabilities and connectivity innovation through eSIM. Supported by digital tools such as MyTrip Companion and the development of parametric and climate-aware solutions, we ensure travelers are supported at every stage of their journey.

What's next for travel in 2026 and beyond

From AI-assisted planning to biometric borders, from pet-inclusive travel to tech-driven destinations, the travel ecosystem is becoming more diversified and more interconnected.

In this new environment, protection must evolve. The partners who integrate protection, services and connectivity into their ecosystems will strengthen customer loyalty and position themselves for sustainable growth in the years ahead.
